Sewer Network Monitoring

A system that monitors inflow and infiltration (I/I), which is the biggest issue in sewer networks, and untreated sewage during rainfall.

Measures the flow rate in sewer networks to monitor and analyze inflow and infiltration (I/I) and untreated sewage during rainfall.

Instrumentation Control (Including Electrical and Information & Communication Systems)

Inflow/Infiltration → Groundwater/Rainwater Entering the Sewer Pipe

Infiltration
  • Groundwater infiltration due to pipe damage or faulty pipe joints
Inflow
  • Rainwater inflow into the sewer network through illegal connections, catch basins, and roof downspouts
  • Major Challenges for Sewer Network Management
  • Capacity overflow or reduced efficiency at treatment plants

Key Achievements

Untreated Sewage During Rainfall → Domestic Sewage Flowing into Stormwater Pipes/Combined Sewer Pipes

Definition
  • Discharge into rivers of untreated sewage that could not be processed at the treatment plant due to rainfall.
Causes
  • Stormwater Pipes: Domestic sewage (including initial rainfall pollutants) discharged into rivers.
  • Combined Sewer: During prolonged rainfall, domestic sewage and rainwater mix and are discharged into rivers.
  • Insufficient Treatment Plant Capacity: Overflow into rivers due to lack of treatment capacity.

Types of Flow Meters

Fixed Flow Meter

  • Field control panel, fixed flow meter, RTU, modem, etc.
  • Excavation and restoration work, excavation/occupation permits required
  • 24/7 monitoring, 365 days a year

Portable Flow Meter

  • Portable flow meter
  • Battery-operated, no data transmission function
  • Connected on-site to a laptop for downloading

Smart Flow Meter (Self-Operated)

  • Combines the advantages of both fixed and portable flow meters
  • Built-in modem, wireless communication possible even in manholes (IP68)
  • No excavation or restoration work required, no excavation/occupation permit needed

Relevant Guidelines and Laws and Regulations

Sewer Design Standards (Reduction Plan for Inflow of Infiltration Water)

When planning sewage pipelines, measures must be taken to address potential infiltration water inflow. For existing sewage pipelines, measures to reduce infiltration water must be established as well.

⑴ Investigation and analysis of infiltration water inflow rates
⑵ Maintenance and monitoring plan to minimize continuous infiltration water occurrence based on age or deterioration

Performance Certification

Article 19 (Operation, Management, and Prohibition of Damage or Interference to Public Sewers) ③ In accordance with the regulations set by the Ministry of Environment, the operator of a public sewer system must ensure that rainwater does not enter public sewage treatment facilities (including simple public sewage treatment facilities) and must measure/record the quantity and quality of wastewater discharged. Such record should be preserved for five years.
